A new approach to secure economic power dispatch
This article presents a new nonlinear convex network flow programming model and algorithm for solving the on-line economic power dispatch with N and N−1 security. Based on the load flow equations, a new nonlinear convex network flow model for secure economic power dispatch is set up and then transformed into a quadratic programming model, in which the search direction in the space of the flow variables is to be solved. The concept of maximum basis in a network flow graph was introduced so that the constrained quadratic programming model was changed into an unconstrained quadratic programming model which was then solved by the reduced gradient method. The proposed model and its algorithm were examined numerically with an IEEE 30-bus test system on an ALPHA 400 Model 610 machine. Satisfactory results were obtaine
Static and Dynamic Properties of Semi-Crystalline Polyethylene.
Properties of extruded polymers are strongly affected by molecular structure. For two different semi-crystalline polymers, low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE), this investigation measures the elastic modulus, plastic flow stress and strain-rate dependence of yield stress. Also, it examines the effect of molecular structure on post-necking tensile fracture. The static and dynamic material tests reveal that extruded UHMWPE has a somewhat larger yield stress and much larger strain to failure than LDPE. For both types of polyethylene, the strain at tensile failure decreases with increasing strain-rate. For strain-rates 0.001⁻3400 s-1, the yield stress variation is accurately represented by the Cowper⁻Symonds equation. These results indicate that, at high strain rates, UHMWPE is more energy absorbent than LDPE as a result of its long chain molecular structure with few branches. This work was partially sponsored by Foundation of State Key Laboratory of Explosion Science and Technology of China under Grant No.KFJJ13-1Z, No. YBKT15-02 and Natural Science Foundation of China under Grant No.11102023. Perforation resistance of aluminum/polyethylene sandwich structure
© 2016 Elsevier Ltd. Ballistic tests were performed on two types of polyethylene core sandwich structures (AA6082/LDPE/AA6082 and AA6082/UHMWPE/AA6082) to investigate their perforation resistance. Bulging and dishing deformation of layered plates were compared under low-velocity impact by hemispherical-nosed projectiles. Different impact failure mechanisms leading to perforation were revealed for laminates composed of a pair of aluminum alloy face sheets separated by a polyethylene interlayer. Using the finite element code Abaqus/Explicit, the perforation behavior and distribution of energy dissipation of each layer during penetration were simulated and analysed. The deformation resistance and anti-penetration properties of polyethylene core sandwich structures were compared with those of monolithic AA6082-T6 plates that had the same areal density. Although the polyethylene interlayer enlarged the plastic deformation zone of the back face, the polyethylene core sandwich structure was a little less effective than the monolithic Al alloy target at resisting hemispherical-nosed projectile impact. The authors gratefully acknowledge the Foundation of State Key Laboratory of Explosion Science and Technology of China under Grant No. KFJJ13-1Z, and Natural Science Foundation of China under Grant No. 11102023, 11172071
Primate mandibular reconstruction with prefabricated, vascularized tissue-engineered bone flaps and recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 implanted in situ
Several studies have validated successful mandibular reconstruction with prefabricated tissue-engineered bone flaps and recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2) implanted in situ. Whether rhBMP-2 applied with the prefabrication technique enables faster ossification of mandibular defects than rhBMP-2 applied in situ is unknown. We aimed to compare mandibular reconstruction with prefabricated, vascularized tissue-engineered bone flaps with rhBMP-2 and rhBMP-2 applied in situ in primates (Rhesus monkey). We also compared the use of the carriers demineralized freeze-dried bone allograft (DFDBA) and coralline hydroxyapatite (CHA) for applying rhBMP-2. After computed tomography of the monkey head, custom meshes were made, loaded with rhBMP-2-incorporated DFDBA or CHA, and implanted in the latissimus dorsi muscle. Meanwhile, contralateral segmental mandibular defects were created, and custom meshes loaded with DFDBA, CHA, or rhBMP-2-incooperated DFDBA and CHA were implanted in situ. Thirteen weeks later, the bone flaps with rhBMP-2-incorporated DFDBA or CHA were transferred to repair segmental mandibular defects. The meshes loaded with DFDBA or CHA alone showed no bone regeneration 13 weeks after implantation in latissimus dorsi muscle. Radiography, angiography and histological analysis were used to evaluate the repair and vascularization of the implant. Segmental mandibular defects were successfully restored with prefabricated bone flaps and rhBMP-2-incorporated CHA in situ, but other segmental mandibular defects remained with rhBMP-2-incorporated DFDBA, DFDBA and CHA in situ. Moreover, mandibles reconstructed with rhBMP-2-incorporated CHA bone flaps revealed more regenerated and homogeneous bone formation than did other reconstructions. The study suggested that the prefabrication technique induced better mandibular reconstruction and bone regeneration in quantity and quality. © 2010 Elsevier Ltd.postprin
Mechanisms underlying purinergic P2X3 receptor-mediated mechanical allodynia induced in diabetic rats

Abstract

Background

Diabetic neuropathy is a common neuropathy associated with paresthaesia and pain. The mechanisms underlying the painful conditions are not well understood. The aim of this study is to investigate the participation of purinergic P2X3 receptors in painful diabetic neuropathy.

Results

Diabetes was induced by an intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin (STZ). We showed that mechanical allodynia was induced two weeks after a STZ injection and lasted for at least another seven weeks. The mechanical allodynia was significantly attenuated by peripheral administration of the P2X receptor antagonists, PPADS or TNP-ATP. DiI was subcutaneously injected into the rat hindpaw to label hindpaw-innervated dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons. ATP activated fast-inactivating P2X3 receptor-mediated currents in the labeled DRG neurons were studied. ATP responses in STZ-treated rats were ~2-fold larger than those in control rats. Furthermore, the expression of P2X3 receptor proteins in the plasma membrane of L4-6 DRGs of STZ rats was significantly enhanced while the total expression of P2X3 receptors remained unaltered.

Conclusions

These results indicate that a large enhancement of P2X3 receptor activity and an increase in the membrane expression of P2X3 receptors contribute to the development of chronic pain in STZ-induced diabetic rats and suggest a possible target for the treatment of diabetic neuropathic pain.</p
A Simple Method to Synthesize Cadmium Hydroxide Nanobelts
Cd(OH)2nanobelts have been synthesized in high yield by a convenient polyol method for the first time. XRD, XPS, FESEM, and TEM were used to characterize the product, which revealed that the product consisted of belt-like crystals about 40 nm in thickness and length up to several hundreds of micrometers. Studies found that the viscosity of the solvent has important influence on the morphology of the final products. The optical absorption spectrum indicates that the Cd(OH)2nanobelts have a direct band gap of 4.45 eV
Electrical and FT-IR measurements of undoped N-type INP materials grown from various stoichiometric melts
P-rich, In-rich and Stoichiometric undoped InP melts have been synthesed by phosphorus in-situ injection method. InP crystal ingots have been grown from these melts by Liquid Encapsulated Czochralski (LEC). Samples from these ingots grown from various Stoichiometric melts have been characterized by Hall Effect and Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy measurements respectively. The Hall Effect measurement results indicate that the net carrier concentration of P-inch undoped InP is higher than that of In-rich and Stoichiometric undoped InP materials. FT-IR spectroscopy measurements reveal that there are intensive absorption peaks which have been proved to be hydrogen related indium vacancy complex V InH 4. By comparing FT-IR spectra, it is found that P-rich InP material has the most intensive absorption peak of V InH 4, while In-rich InP material has the weakest absorption peak.published_or_final_versio

Compensation defects in annealed undoped liquid encapsulated Czochralski InP
As-grown undoped n-type semiconducting and annealed undoped semi-insulating (SI) liquid encapsulated Czochralski (LEC) InP has been studied by temperature dependent Hall measurement, photoluminescence spectroscopy, infrared absorption, and photocurrent spectroscopy. P-type conduction SI InP can frequently be obtained by annealing undoped LEC InP. This is caused by a high concentration of thermally induced native acceptor defects. In some cases, it can be shown that the thermally induced n-type SI property of undoped LEC InP is caused by a midgap donor compensating for the net shallow acceptors. The midgap donor is proposed to be a phosphorus antisite related defect. Traps in annealed SI InP have been detected by photocurrent spectroscopy and have been compared with reported results. The mechanisms of defect formation are discussed. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.published_or_final_versio
